Lt. Governor Gerald Berkel
Gerald Berkel was born on St.Eustatius September 21st 1969 as the third child in a family of six. After completing primary education on statia he moved to Aruba where he joined older siblings to complete secondary education. Interested in the field of engineering Berkel then move to St.Maarten where he obtained associate degree in electrical engineering. He then attended College in Melbourne Florida where he obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Computer engineering at the Florida Institute of Technology. After graduating Berkel returned to Statia where he married his childhood sweetheart in 2006 and had two children.

On his return to St.Eustatius he started work at the local telephone company Eutel NV as manager of the local branch under the supervision and managing company (Antelecom NV). In 2004 at the termination of the management arrangement Berkel was appointed Interim director of Eutel NV. Since this period Berkel and his team has transformed the company and developed the telecommunication infrastructure and market of St.Eustatius with the introduction of modern services like Internet and Mobile services and the upgrading of the facilities for next generation products and services. Though his vast growing network of business associates Berkel has gained associations with various international organizations and served as guest speaker at an International telecom conference (WCIA) in Washington DC. He was appointed as managing director of Eutel NV in 2007 a position he held at Eutel NV until March 2010.

As a son of the soil Berkel has been very active in social and economic life and developments of the island since his returned he has served as vice president of the youth council, vice president of the Supervisory Board of the housing foundation, member of St.Eustatius business association STEBA, president of the basketball association and still serves on various other social and nonprofit committees and advisory bodies. In 2003 Berkel was appointed 1st acting Lt.Governor of the island and has been active in this function ever since working closely with executive and island council members and various Federal and Kingdom Ministries over the past years.

Since Berkel's appointment as Lt. Governors April 1st 2010. He has focused on the facilitation of the constitutional change process, by working with federal and kingdom governments and strengthening the island government to be able to meet the demands of an island quickly developing. Berkel vision for Statia is to see his home island develop into and island with a diverse and vibrant economy where everyone can be actively involved while still preserving it's culture and heritage.
