Job Vacancy : Assistant Harbour Master
The Executive Council of the Statia Government invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following position:
Position: 1 Full-time – Assistant Harbour Master

Location: Sint Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands
Duration: Temporary position for a trial period of one year, with the prospect of permanent employment.
As the Assistant Harbour Master, you will work closely with the Harbour Master and the team at Unit Seaport. You will provide support by coordinating the duties of the harbour employees, supervising general safety and security in the maritime environment, the harbour, and its grounds, carrying out inspections, and providing advice where necessary. Along with the Harbour Master, you will ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
Your main responsibilities:
- Coordinating work at the harbour and supervising harbour employees;
- Assisting the Harbour Master in the professional handling of nautical traffic, ensuring compliance with rules and regulations, and maintaining harbour safety and security;
- Partly responsible for ensuring compliance with (island) rules and regulations applicable to the marine environment, the harbour, and its grounds, and upholding these rules;
- Supporting with control and inspection duties at the harbour, such as incidents, accidents, environmental pollution, collisions, hazardous substances, infectious diseases, or stowaways on board, among others;
- Enforcing harbour regulations and drafting official reports in cases of violations;
- Assisting management with other activities when needed and performing duties of similar or lower-ranked positions within the field.
Job requirements:
- Ability to lead, manage, and motivate employees;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, for constant interaction with all departments, employee levels, and external customers;
- Skills in coordination, report-writing, advising, and conducting inspections;
- Knowledge of rules and regulations regarding environmentally hazardous materials and environmental pollution in relation to vessels, the marine environment, harbours, and harbour grounds;
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines for maritime environments;
- Knowledge of safety and security regulations, including the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code;
- Verbal and written communication skills in both Dutch and English;
- Prior managerial experience is an advantage.
Terms of employment: This position is temporary for a trial period of one year, with the prospect of permanent employment. The salary offered is based on scale 9, with a minimum of $3,576.23 and a maximum of $4,797.38 gross per month, based on a 36-hour work week. These amounts are in accordance with the salary table of the Statia Government dated 4 December 2024. Placement within the salary scale is based on qualifications and experience.
Additionally, the employee will receive a holiday allowance of 8.33% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% of the annual income. The successful candidate must provide a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) and undergo a medical evaluation. An assessment and reference check may form part of the recruitment process. In the case of equal suitability, internal candidates will be given preference.
