Memorial Day observed on Statia
ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius -- St. Eustatius observed Memorial Day with a traditional ceremony at Historical Fort Oranje, on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022. The ceremony included presentations by various members of the clergy, musical selections, and other ceremonial traditions as well as the taps, played by local trumpeter Mr. George Farrell.
Government Commissioner Alida Francis delivered the keynote address and reminded those present to never forget the sacrifice of fallen soldiers locally and around the world. Their sacrifices should encourage us to fight a different war that defends our values, honesty, integrity, fortitude of character and to learn lessons from our past.
Francis laid the first wreath at the monument of the fallen soldiers. A processional of all uniformed groups paraded to the Salem Cemetery, where they each laid a wreath at the gravesite monument of Statia’s fallen soldiers.
