Statia takes steps to protect health and environment with wastewater management initiative
A major initiative focusing on wastewater management has been unveiled by the Statia Government. This programme aims to protect public health, conserve the environment, and safeguard the coral reefs surrounding the island.
This project aligns with the goals of the Nature and Environment Policy Programme (NEPP) and adopts a multi-step, multi-annual approach with phased implementation.
Phase 1 of the project involves building a centralized wastewater treatment facility at the island's waste management site, with an estimated cost of €2,530,000. Financial support for this phase has been requested from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.
The project will bring important benefits such as better public health, stronger environmental protection, preservation of coral reefs and local wildlife, and support for the island’s economy and tourism. This plan is a long-term vision for creating a comprehensive, sustainable wastewater management system that can accommodate future growth and development.
The Government of Statia has expressed its commitment to environmental sustainability and creating a healthier island for residents. This project marks a crucial step towards addressing the island's wastewater challenges and ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable future for Statia.
