” Her remarks set the tone for an initiative that promises to improve Sint Eustatius while honoring its history through the inclusion of Statia 2026 as a core part of the Region Deal.

The Region Deal is a comprehensive initiative aimed at revitalizing the island through sustainable development, cultural preservation, and improved quality of life. Backed by €10 million in funding, the program includes restoring key cultural landmarks, transforming them into vibrant spaces for public gatherings and economic opportunities. It also focuses on healthcare advancements, enhanced recreational facilities, and positioning Sint Eustatius as a premier destination for eco-tourism and heritage tourism.

During the kickoff meeting at the EOC building in Oranjestad, government officials, project plan writers, and representatives from local foundations—including the Auxiliary Home, Historical Foundation, Monument Foundation, and Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance—outlined priorities and strategies. These organizations provided valuable input, aligning the Region Deal’s goals with Statia’s heritage.

Interim Programme Manager Jorien Wuite, the meeting chair, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “This is more than a set of projects—it is a movement to uplift, unite, and foster cultural expression on Statia. By including the Region deal  as a cornerstone of Statia 2026, we are not only celebrating our heritage but also building a future of opportunity and progress.”

Program managers Theo Telting, representing the Public Entity St. Eustatius, and Eric Hartstra, representing the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Affairs (BZK), echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the collaboration between local and national stakeholders.

The Region Deal, which runs through December 31, 2028, is designed to evolve with the island’s needs. Governance structures and regular progress reviews will ensure accountability and lasting impact.

For residents, these changes mean an improvement in healthcare, revitalized recreational spaces, and a renewed connection to their cultural heritage. For visitors, Statia 2026 promises a richer understanding of the island’s identity, history, and environment.
