Greenkidz launches mosquito programme in Statia

GreenKidz, a leading environmental education foundation, has successfully launched its mosquito prevention programme ‘Don’t Give Mosquitoes a Chance’ in Statia.

The five-day initiative took place from 27th to 31st January 2025, focusing on training local vector specialists and health and community workers to implement the programme in local schools.

With support from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and MoBoCon (Mosquito-Borne Control) coordinator Marieta Braks, GreenKidz founder Maya Mathias led a series of training sessions for seven professionals from Statia and Saba. The programme was introduced to students aged 8 to 12 at Golden Rock School, Seventh-day Adventist School (SDA), and Governor de Graaff School.

Maya Mathias expressed her satisfaction with the trip, stating, "It has been a long-standing dream to bring GreenKidz to the Windward Islands, and we are thrilled with how well our mosquito prevention programme was received in Statia."

The initiative aims to equip local professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to reduce mosquito-borne diseases through education and community engagement. In a wrap-up session, all participants expressed their commitment to continuing collaboration with GreenKidz in the future, adapting and expanding the programme to meet the needs of schools and families in Statia.
