During the visit, KNMI representatives Jeroen Dooijenburgh and Jos Diepeveen introduced the new Multihazard BES Dashboard, a platform designed for professional stakeholders that provides real-time warnings for hurricanes, earthquakes, and other geophysical threats.
The delegation also reviewed the impact of the past hurricane season, with particular focus on Tropical Storm Ernesto, which proved stronger than initial forecasts suggested. Discussions centred on improving forecasting accuracy and response measures.
In addition, KNMI visited Statia’s harbour to assess how forecasting services support maritime operations. The forecasters were pleased with the ongoing collaboration, particularly in the communication of wave and swell warnings, including small craft advisories.
As part of their outreach efforts, the team also visited Golden Rock School, engaging students in a science project on hurricane forecasting to enhance awareness of weather phenomena and preparedness.
The visit reaffirmed KNMI’s commitment to supporting Statia in disaster preparedness and meteorological monitoring, ensuring improved forecasting tools and stakeholder collaboration.
