Statia Government Highlights Personal and Community Benefits of Planting and Caring for Trees. A Simple Way to Support Statia’s Nature and Community

In celebration of Earth Day, the Statia Government reminds residents of the quiet power one tree can hold for every household and neighborhood on our island. Beyond their natural beauty, trees bring real comfort and savings to everyday life.

A tree near your home can offer shade that cools the air around your house. This means your indoor space stays more comfortable, and you rely less on air conditioning which reduces electricity bills and eases pressure on your household budget. Trees also help the ground hold water longer after rain, which means your garden stays nourished and green with less watering.

Trees do more than support your home; they help strengthen our entire island. Their roots help hold soil in place, reducing erosion and improving the land’s ability to bounce back after storms. Their canopies offer shelter for birds, insects and other pollinators that are part of life on Statia. Their quiet presence reminds us of the natural balance we all benefit from.

In partnership with the NEPP Program, the Statia Government proudly supports the Adopt-a-Tree initiative, part of STENAPA’s ReforeStatia program. This program gives every resident the opportunity to bring new life into their surroundings while contributing to a greener and healthier island. The program has many trees available, including sugar apple, guava, and tamarind. Reach out to see what’s currently available.

We encourage everyone to take part and adopt at least one tree or plant. Whether you place it in your garden, at the edge of your yard, or care for one in a shared space, you are helping to restore the island's nature. This is not just about planting; it is about shaping an island where nature and community grow side by side.
