Caribbean Netherlands tourism partially recovered in 2021
In 2021, inbound tourism in the Caribbean Netherlands showed signs of recovery. The signs were evident in the numbers of visitor arrivals by air on Saba and St Eustatius. At 44 thousand, fourth quarter visitor arrivals on Bonaire even exceeded the level of two years previously. This is shown by the latest figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
In Q4 2021 Bonaire saw 44 thousand air visitor arrivals, i.e. 10 percent more than in the same period of 2019. The number of visitors already returned to its pre-pandemic level in the third quarter.
In the entire year 2021, 111 thousand visitors landed on Bonaire, i.e. 70 percent of total air arrivals in 2019.
Share of European Dutch visitors further up on Bonaire
On Bonaire, the share of visitors from the European Netherlands rose from 35 percent in 2019 to 55 percent in 2021. The share from Aruba, Curaçao and St Maarten fell from 22 to 15 percent in the same period; the share from the United States declined as well, from 25 to 16 percent.
Cruise passenger traffic to Bonaire increasing again
Inbound tourism includes not only visitors arriving by air but also cruise passengers. Cruise traffic stopped when the measures against coronavirus took effect on Bonaire in mid-March 2020. Cruise ships only called at the port of Bonaire again as of September 2021. Whereas in November and December 2019 inbound cruise passenger traffic stood at approximately 52 thousand and 68 thousand respectively, there were merely around 18 and 35 thousand cruise passenger arrivals respectively in the same months of 2021.
Inbound air tourism on Saba still recovering
Saba received approximately 1,400 visitors by air in Q4 2021. This represents a 9-percent rise on the previous quarter. Despite the rise continuing into the fourth quarter, the number of visitor arrivals was still only 61 percent of the total two years previously (2,200 arrivals).
Last year, Saba received altogether approximately 4 thousand visitors. This is more than in 2020 - with only 2,700 visitors - but still lies 56 percent below the pre-pandemic level.
More people visiting St Eustatius again
In the fourth quarter of 2021, slightly under 1,200 air passengers arrived on St Eustatius. This is merely 45 percent of the number of visitors recorded two years previously.
Both St Eustatius and Saba have seen a consistent rise in the number of inbound tourists, although the numbers have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels. A total of 3,600 tourists visited St Eustatius last year, versus nearly 11 thousand in 2019. Tourist arrivals were slightly higher than one year previously, when they stood at 3,200; two thirds of the visitors in 2020 arrived in the first quarter of the year.

Toerisme Caribisch Nederland deels hersteld in 2021
Het toerisme in Caribisch Nederland liet in 2021 herstel zien. Dat was zichtbaar in het aantal bezoekers dat per vliegtuig naar Saba en Sint Eustatius kwam. Het aantal bezoekers naar Bonaire oversteeg met 44 duizend in het vierde kwartaal zelfs dat van hetzelfde kwartaal van 2019. Dit blijkt uit de laatste cijfers van het CBS.
In het vierde kwartaal van 2021 kwamen er 44 duizend bezoekers per vliegtuig naar Bonaire, 10 procent meer dan in de vergelijkbare periode van 2019. In het derde kwartaal van vorig jaar lag het aantal bezoekers weer op het oude niveau van voor de coronacrisis. In heel 2021 reisden 111 duizend bezoekers per vliegtuig naar Bonaire, 70 procent van het aantal bezoekers dat in 2019 per vliegtuig naar het eiland kwam.
Aandeel bezoekers Europees Nederland op Bonaire verder gestegen
Het aandeel bezoekers uit Europees Nederland dat naar Bonaire kwam is gestegen van 35 procent in 2019 naar 55 procent in 2021. Het aandeel bezoekers uit Aruba, Curaçao en St. Maarten is gedaald van 22 procent in 2019 naar 15 procent in 2021. Ook het aandeel Amerikaanse bezoekers is gedaald, van 25 procent in 2019 naar 16 procent in 2021.
Cruisepassagierbezoek Bonaire trekt aan
Naast het inkomend toerisme per vliegtuig zijn er ook bezoekers die per cruiseschip komen. Nadat de coronamaatregelen voor Bonaire half maart 2020 ingingen stopte het cruiseverkeer. Pas vanaf september 2021 deden er weer cruiseschepen de haven van Bonaire aan. Waar in november en december 2019 achtereenvolgens zo’n 52 duizend en 68 duizend passagiers via cruiseschepen naar het eiland kwamen, waren dit in dezelfde maanden van 2021 slechts zo’n 18 en 35 duizend passagiers. Voor het uitbreken van de coronapandemie kwamen de meeste cruisepassagiers in november, december, januari en februari naar Bonaire.
Herstel inkomend toerisme per vliegtuig op Saba zet door
In het vierde kwartaal van 2021 kwamen er zo’n 1 400 bezoekers per vliegtuig naar Saba. Dat is een stijging van 9 procent ten opzichte van het kwartaal daarvoor. Hoewel de stijgende lijn dus in het vierde kwartaal zich doorzette, was het aantal bezoekers nog altijd maar 61 procent van dezelfde periode in 2019 (2 200 bezoekers).
In totaal kwamen er in 2021 zo’n 4 duizend bezoekers naar Saba. Dat is meer dan in 2020 toen er slechts 2 700 bezoekers kwamen, maar nog altijd 56 procent minder dan voor de coronacrisis.
Weer meer bezoekers naar Sint Eustatius
In het vierde kwartaal van 2021 kwamen er een kleine 1 200 bezoekers per vliegtuig naar Sint Eustatius. Dat is maar 45 procent van het aantal dat in dezelfde periode van 2019 het eiland bezocht.
Voor Sint Eustatius geldt, net als voor Saba, dat het aantal inkomende toeristen per vliegtuig nog altijd stijgt, maar nog niet op het niveau zit van voor de coronacrisis zit. In totaal kwamen er vorig jaar 3 600 bezoekers naar Sint Eustatius, terwijl dit er in 2019 bijna 11 duizend waren. Het aantal bezoekers in 2021 is net iets meer dan een jaar eerder, toen er 3 200 bezoekers kwamen, waarvan ongeveer twee derde in het eerste kwartaal.
