CBS: Launch National Accounts Survey 2020 in Caribbean Netherlands
During the next months, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) will carry out a survey among companies in the Caribbean Netherlands: the National Accounts Survey 2020. The survey aims to show the economic development on the three islands. Companies on Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba will be approached by CBS to complete the questionnaire.
The results of the survey will be published in the last quarter of 2022.
Some results of the 2019 survey:
- In 2019, Bonaire's gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 6.3 percent in volume. St Eustatius and Saba recorded a contraction of respectively 8.6 percent and 5.3 percent.
- The value added of the construction sector on Bonaire rose by 23.3 percent. Trade benefited from the strong growth in construction, due to higher imports of building materials by DIY stores. Other companies in the trade sector, such as supermarkets, also fared well in 2019. The value added in this sector increased by 10.1 percent, and in the accommodation and food services increased by 11.2 percent.
- The 8.6 percent contraction on St Eustatius was mainly related to a few large companies on the island. Their production is mainly export-oriented and dependent on regional developments in the oil sector.
- On Saba, the contraction was mainly caused by the construction and education sectors. Education showed a decrease in value added due to a declining number of students in 2019. The year-on-year decline in the construction sector can be explained by the fact that a lot of work was needed in 2018 to repair the damage from hurricanes Irma and Maria.

CBS: Start Nationale Rekeningen enquête Caribisch Nederland 2020
De komende maanden wordt er op de eilanden van Caribisch Nederland het jaarlijkse onderzoek onder bedrijven uitgevoerd voor het verslagjaar 2020. Het onderzoek heeft tot doel de economische ontwikkeling op de drie eilanden in kaart te brengen. Een onderdeel van dit onderzoek is de Nationale Rekeningen enquête. Hiervoor worden bedrijven op Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba door het CBS benaderd om een enquête in te vullen.
De resultaten van het onderzoek worden in het laatste kwartaal van 2022 gepubliceerd.
Enkele resultaten uit het onderzoek Nationale Rekeningen 2019 op Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba:
Het bruto binnenlands product (bbp) op Bonaire is in volume met 6,3 procent toegenomen in 2019. Op Sint Eustatius en Saba was er een krimp van respectievelijk 8,6 procent en 5,3 procent.
De toegevoegde waarde van de bouw op Bonaire steeg met 23,3 procent. De handel profiteerde van de sterke groei in de bouw, door een toename van de invoer van bouwmaterialen door bouwmarkten. Ook met andere bedrijven in de handel, zoals supermarkten, ging het goed in 2019. De toegevoegde waarde in de handel steeg met 10,1 procent en van de horeca met 11,2 procent.
De krimp van 8,6 procent op Sint Eustatius werd vooral veroorzaakt door enkele grote bedrijven op het eiland. Deze bedrijven produceren vooral voor de export, en zijn afhankelijk van regionale ontwikkelingen in de oliesector.
De krimp op Saba werd vooral veroorzaakt door de bouw en het onderwijs. De toegevoegde waarde van het onderwijs daalde, omdat er in 2019 minder studenten kwamen. Dat de bouw is gedaald ten opzichte van het jaar ervoor komt doordat in 2018 veel werkzaamheden nodig waren om de schade van de orkanen Irma en Maria te herstellen.
Om dit voor de eilanden zeer belangrijke onderzoek voorspoedig te laten verlopen, vraagt het CBS de medewerking van bedrijven. Het CBS is wettelijk verplicht om alle verzamelde gegevens strikt vertrouwelijk te behandelen.
