More tourism on St Eustatius and Saba in first half of 2022
In the first six months of 2022, the number of visitor arrivals by air on St Eustatius and Saba was one and a half times as high as in the same period last year. At the same time, air visitor arrivals on Bonaire tripled; the number was 10 percent up on the first half of 2019. This is shown by the latest figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
Inbound tourism by air St.Eustatius
In the first half of 2022, around 2.4 thousand visitors arrived on St Eustatius by plane. This is one and a half times as many as in the same period last year (1.4 thousand), but still approximately half the number of arrivals recorded in the first half of 2019. This is possibly due to the number of aircraft movements, which is approximately three quarters of the number from three years previously.
The share of visitors from the US was 16 percent in the first half of 2022, while it stood at 11 percent each time for the whole of 2019, 2020 and 2021. Whereas there were relatively more visitors from the US, there were relatively fewer from the Dominican Republic and Aruba, Curaçao and St Maarten.
Tourism on Saba up in first half of 2022
Similar to St Eustatius, Saba’s visitor arrivals stood at approximately 2.4 thousand in the first half of 2022, i.e. also more than one and a half times as many as one year previously. Despite this increase, the number was around half the total recorded in the first six months of 2019. Strikingly, the number of aircraft movements to and from Saba did reach or even exceeded the level of 2019. In other words, although Saba had around the same number of inbound and outbound flights, they carried fewer visitors than in 2019.
At 27 percent, the share of European Dutch visitors to Saba was higher than in the preceding years. Here as well, relatively fewer visitors came from the neighbouring Dutch islands. In 2019, their share was still more than 29 percent, versus 20 percent in the first half of 2022.
More visitor arrivals on Bonaire, fewer flights
In the first half of 2022, the number of visitors arrivals by air on Bonaire stood at more than 85 thousand, i.e. over three times as many as in the same period last year. It was even around 10 percent higher than in 2019, whereas the number of aircraft movements to and from Bonaire was slightly less than three quarters compared to 2019.
Thus, on average, there were more passengers per flight in the first half of 2022 than in the same period in 2019. The proportion of visitor arrivals from the US rose to pre-pandemic levels: around 22 percent. At 55 percent, the share of visitors from the European Netherlands, on the other hand, was much higher than the 35 percent in 2019.

Meer toeristen naar Sint Eustatius en Saba in eerste halfjaar van 2022
In de eerste helft van 2022 kwamen er vergeleken met een jaar eerder anderhalf keer zoveel toeristen per vliegtuig naar Sint Eustatius en Saba.
Tegelijkertijd verdrievoudigde het aantal toeristen dat per vliegtuig Bonaire bezocht; het aantal lag hier 10 procent hoger dan in de eerste helft van 2019. Dit blijkt uit de laatste cijfers van het CBS
Inkomende toeristen per vliegtuig Sint Eustatius
In de eerste helft van 2022 deden zo’n 2,4 duizend toeristen Sint Eustatius per vliegtuig aan. Dat is anderhalf keer zoveel als in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder (1,4 duizend) maar nog altijd ongeveer de helft van het aantal toeristen dat in de eerste helft van 2019 het eiland bezocht. Wellicht is dit het gevolg van het aantal vliegtuigbewegingen dat op ongeveer drie kwart zit van het aantal van drie jaar eerder.
In de eerste helft van 2022 was het aandeel Amerikaanse toeristen 16 procent, terwijl dit in heel 2019, 2020 en 2021 steeds ongeveer 11 procent was. Terwijl er relatief meer Amerikanen kwamen, waren er juist relatief minder toeristen uit de Dominicaanse Republiek en Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten.
Meer toeristen in eerste halfjaar naar Saba dan in 2021
Het aantal toeristen dat Saba in de eerste helft van 2022 bezocht, bedroeg net als in Sint Eustatius zo’n 2,4 duizend. Ook dat is ruim anderhalf keer zoveel als in dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Ondanks de toename is het aantal toeristen ongeveer de helft van het aantal dat in de eerste helft van 2019 het eiland aandeed. Opvallend is dat het aantal vliegtuigbewegingen van en naar Saba wel op het niveau van 2019 zat of er zelfs boven lag. Hoewel er ongeveer evenveel vluchten kwamen en gingen naar Saba, vervoerden deze vluchten dus minder toeristen dan in 2019.
Het aandeel Nederlanders van het Europese continent dat naar Saba kwam, lag met 27 procent hoger dan de jaren daarvoor. Ook hier kwamen relatief minder toeristen uit de naburige Nederlandse eilanden. In 2019 was hun aandeel nog 29 procent, terwijl dit voor de eerste helft van 2022 uitkwam op 20 procent.
Meer toeristen met minder vluchten naar Bonaire
In de eerste helft van 2022 kwamen er ruim 85 duizend toeristen per vliegtuig naar Bonaire. Dat is ruim drie keer zoveel als dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Het is zelfs zo’n 10 procent meer dan in 2019, terwijl het aantal vliegtuigbewegingen van en naar Bonaire juist een kleine drie kwart was van dat in 2019.
Gemiddeld waren er dus meer passagiers per vlucht in de eerste helft van 2022 dan in dezelfde periode in 2019. Onder de toeristen is het aandeel Amerikanen gestegen tot het niveau van voor COVID-19, namelijk zo’n 22 procent. Het aandeel Europees Nederlanders lag met 55 procent wel veel hoger dan de 35 procent in 2019.
