Protection Code Effective from 1st January 2025

Starting 1 January 2025, the Social Support and Prevention of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Decree BES will come into effect in Statia. This decree marks a significant step towards building a safer and more caring community, providing better support to residents and care professionals in preventing and addressing domestic violence and child abuse (DVCA).

Social Support

The decree enhances social support, allowing people to live independently at home for as long as possible. This includes services like household assistance and day care, which are considered essential forms of support.

Advice Centre

From 2025, those concerned about domestic violence or child abuse, including professionals and residents, can turn to a dedicated advice centre for assistance. Professionals will have the right to report suspected violence under clearly defined conditions.

Protection Code for Professionals

As of 1st January 2025, local organisations in Statia will be required to implement a Protection Code. This code outlines five steps that professionals must follow when identifying and reporting suspected cases of child abuse or domestic violence. It provides clear guidelines on handling these sensitive situations.

For residents, the Protection Code ensures that professionals address concerns with care and consult the client or parents before making any formal reports. The code is known as the Beschermingscode in Dutch.

Together, We Make Statia Safer

This decree is a crucial step towards ensuring a safer and more caring community for all who live in Statia.
