ZJCN launches campaign against domestic violence and child abuse on Statia

Care & Youth Caribbean Netherlands (ZJCN) has recently introduced a new campaign called Safe Together, Strong Together, aimed at combating domestic violence and child abuse.

This initiative is designed to equip professionals such as social workers, teachers, and healthcare providers with the tools to implement the recently introduced Protection Code, which became effective on the 1st of January 2025. A dedicated helpline (0800 - 1414) has also been launched, offering confidential advice to individuals dealing with difficult situations at home or those who suspect abuse within their community. The service is completely anonymous, ensuring privacy for those seeking guidance.

The campaign has garnered support from local leaders, including Commissioners Nina den Heyer from Bonaire, Reuben Merkman from Statia, and Eviton Heyliger from Saba. They participated in several community events aimed at raising awareness among both professionals and the public. The events featured personal stories from individuals who have faced domestic violence, such as Jolly van Beelen - Ferwerda, Principal of Governor de Graaff School. Actor and child abuse survivor Archell Thompson also played a key role in the campaign, delivering an interactive theatre performance designed to spark conversation and reflection on these critical issues.

Commissioner Reuben Merkman emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating, “This campaign is vital in shifting mindsets within our community, particularly when it comes to the protection of our children. Our youth represent the future, and I’m pleased to contribute to making Statia a safer place for them to thrive.”

Jantine Homan, Head of the Social Domain at ZJCN, added: “Sadly, domestic violence and child abuse continue to be real problems in the Caribbean Netherlands. The Protection Code and the advice helpline are essential steps toward providing help and advice to victims and bystanders. We’re proud of this campaign, which shines a light on these issues, and we remain committed to ensuring a safer environment for all.”
