The Security Unit is responsible for maintaining safety and security at F.D. Roosevelt Airport and Sint Eustatius Harbour (Charles A. Woodley Pier). Operating under the Directorate of Transport, the unit ensures that both critical transportation hubs comply with national and international security regulations.

By implementing strict access control, surveillance, and emergency response measures, the Security Unit helps protect passengers, cargo, and infrastructure from potential threats. The team works closely with law enforcement, customs, and port authorities to uphold aviation and maritime security standards, ensuring smooth and secure operations.

Responsibilities

The team is stationed at both the airport and the harbour, enforcing security measures and responding to emergencies, such as natural disasters or health crises. Some security activities may not always be visible, but the unit is always working to protect residents and visitors.

Security at Ports

Sint Eustatius has an international airport and harbour, key entry points for global ships and aircraft. These facilities support the local economy but must follow strict international regulations. Failing to meet these standards could result in the loss of important certifications.

To maintain certification, security operations must meet high standards in training and performance. The key regulations include:

  • ISPS Code – International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (for harbours)

  • ICAO Regulations – International Civil Aviation Organisation rules (for airports)

Training and Certification

Security officers must receive extensive training to perform their duties effectively. Required qualifications include:

  • Aviation and maritime security

  • VHF radio procedures

  • X-ray scanner and detection equipment use

  • Identification and handling of explosive devices (IEDs)

  • Patrolling, observation, and reporting

  • First aid and emergency response (including EHBO and AED)

  • Crisis management and hazardous environment training

This training ensures officers can handle more than routine tasks like luggage checks or ticket validation.
