Island Council

The Island Council is the highest governing body of Sint Eustatius, responsible for decision-making and enacting regulations within the island. It has the authority to make local ordinances and approve the island’s budget. The Island Council holds the authority to appoint and dismiss commissioners and is supported by the Registrar. It also has the right to dismiss personnel from the Registrar's office.

The Island Council comprises five members, elected every four years. Each member represents the people of Sint Eustatius and ensures their voices are heard in local governance.

Key Responsibilities of the Island Council

The Island Council has three main roles:

  1. Supervisory
    • Regulates daily governance with regards to the budget and policies.

  2. Oversight
  3. Representative

Island Council Meetings

Island Council meetings are held after topics are first discussed in Central Committee meetings. Final votes and decisions happen during Island Council meetings.

Key decisions are made in public meetings to promote transparency and community involvement. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate either in-person or by viewing the live streams available on the “Statia Government” Facebook page.

Meetings typically occur on Thursdays, with the Island Governor acting as the Independent Chairperson.
